There are 4 types of thoughts. Practical thoughts which are necessary for your survival. Wasteful thoughts which are about useless trivia. Positive thoughts which empower and energize you and negative thoughts that disempower and drain you. Your self talk is dominated by negative words like no, not, don't, can't, won't, should, shouldn't, never etc. and you play the same tapes wih the same messages over and over again every day. The messages are messages that make you worry, make you feel like a victim or messages that are self critical. Victim-Critic-Worrier self talk.
You don't choose your thoughts. Your thoughts choose you. They have been programmed into you since you learned the alphabet and began labeling everything around you which separated you from the whole. Before you could speak, you WERE the world. With language came programming from parents ( repeaters), from government, news, schools, church etc.
Thoughts are imaginary. Your past is imaginary. You allow it to define who you think you are. The past no longer exists except in your imagination as a memory that you replay like an old movie called "the story of me". The future is imaginary. It hasn't happened and may never happen as you imagine it.
You have been lied to by the media. It teaches you to catastophize, to futurize and to react to the drama of the physical world of form with fear and anger that keeps you trapped in a low vibrational energy field. It is "the story of us" and it's as much a fairy tale as "the story of me".
